1963 Back-O'-The-Card: Loren Babe (Idaho Falls Yankees)

Loren first reached the majors with the Yankees in 1952, playing in a handful of games late in the season. In spring training of 1953, he showed Casey Stengel enough to be on the Yankees' Opening Day roster. With the Yanks opening at Griffith Stadium in Washington, Mickey Mantle hit his fabled 565-foot home run with a bat he borrowed from the Yankee rookie. While Mickey used Loren's bat for the rest of the season, the third baseman was sold to the Philadelphia A's less than two weeks later.
For the rest of the season, Loren got the most playing time at third for the Mackmen, finishing fourth among the circuit's third in putouts (122) and fifth in double plays (27). After the campaign, he returned to the Yanks in the multi-player swap that brought Harry Byrd to New York.
In 1954, '55 and '56, he was the regular third baseman for Toronto of the International League. In '54, Loren had 19 homers and 73 RBIs with a .447 slugging average.
Returning for his second year managing Idaho Falls, Loren began managing at Class D Auburn in '61.
