"Jim thrives on work- the more he pitches, the better he becomes. At Richmond in 1957, he toiled a total of 226 innings and topped the loop in strikeouts with 161 victims.

Last season he won twice in relief for New York, once over Cleveland and then against Washington. Starting against Chicago in September, he hurled a 4-hit, 3-1 win.

"One of the finest pitching prospects among the young hurlers of Casey Stengel, Coates will be starting his second full season with the Yankees. He had one of the better relief pitching records in the majors last season.

Coates began his professional career with Olean, N.Y., in 1952 and since has been with Binghamton, Richmond, Joplin and Norfolk. His best year to date was in 1957 with Richmond of the International League when he had the low earned-run average of 2.63 and won 14 games while losing 11.

He has good control. In his first season of pro ball with Olean he struck out 223 men and walked only 128."

"Bob is no stranger to Kansas City fans. Before either Bob or K.C. joined the majors, he was their star outfielder. In 1950 he hit .304 and the following season he had a torrid .344 mark with 108 R.B.I.'s.

If Bob can repeat his fine performances this year, the A's feel they'll start moving up the American League ladder."

"Cerv came up to the Yankees in 1954 after a .317 year at Kansas City in the American Association in '53. He turned in creditable performances of .260, .341 and .304 with New York before the Kansas City A's obtained him. Bob got a pinch-hit home run for the Yankees in the 1955 World Series.

He covers a lot of ground in the outfield for a big fellow."
