1960 Back-O'-The-Card: Bill Stafford

This young man is ready to win in the major leagues. Manager Stengel has enough confidence in Bill to give him a few starts during the Yankee stretch run to the pennant. His faith in the youngster is justified by an 11-7 record at Richmond, including three shutouts, and a 2.06 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 144 innings- 6.3 K's per nine innings.
Bill has been a top Yankee prospect since posting an identical 11-7 record for Binghamton of the Eastern League in 1958, with a 2.25 ERA and two shutouts. This followed a 5-3 showing with a 0.88 ERA in '57, with the right-hander averaging 6.9 strikeouts per nine innings for St. Petersburg of the Class D Florida State League in his first professional season.
Bill comes to the Bronx from Catskill, New York.
