1960 Back-O'-The-Card: Bob Turley

"Turley is now in his ninth year in the major leagues and if he can make a comeback somewhere near his form of 1958 the Yankees could very easily take the American League flag in 1960. After winning 21 and losing only 7 in 1958, Bob had a comparatively bad season in 1959 when he ended with an 8-11 record.

He has been in baseball since 1948 and has pitched in the majors with the St. Louis Browns and Baltimore Orioles. He led the league in strikeouts in 1954 with 185 while hurling for the Orioles. With Aberdeen of the Northern League in 1949 he won 23 and lost only 5 while striking out 205 batters."

April 4: Pitches 2-hit victory over Red Sox on opening day of season.

May 31: Blanks Washington on neat 2-hitter.

June 6: Posts 6-hit win over Cleveland.

July 4th: Has no-hitter going against Senators until 9th. Wins 1-hit shutout.

August 8: 4-hits Kansas City for 3-0 win.

September 13: Hurls 10 scoreless innings against Cleveland and strikes out eight.

BOB TURLEY HURLS YANKS TO WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Milwaukee, October 9, 1958 - "Bullet Bob Turley finished a great Yankee comeback against the Milwaukee Braves as New York won the seventh and deciding World Series game.

The Braves had taken three of the first four games and seemed assured of final victory. But Turley pitched a fifth game shutout as New York won 7-0. In the sixth game, Turley went in to pitch the last of the 10th, score 4-3 in favor of the Yanks, two out and a man on third. Bob faced dangerous Frank Torre and got him to pop up for the final out.

In the seventh game, Turley relieved Don Larsen in the 3rd. He held Milwaukee to just two hits and one run and won the game 6 to 2, for an amazing Yankee comeback.

Bob, the only 20 game winner in the American League, had a season's record of 21 and 7 to win the Cy Young Award for best pitcher."

September 10: Scatters four hits to beat K.C. 12-1. Retires 22 men in a row.
