1960 Back-O'-The-Card: Bill Short

SPORT MAGAZINE 1960 ROOKIE STAR
"Bill looks a little like Whitey Ford and the Yankees are hoping he'll also pitch like the star lefty. Last season he was the outstanding hurler in the International League and was named All-Star Minor League left-hander. He has good control and a fine strikeout record.
Bill spent the last six months in the Army."

1960 Back-O'-The-Card: Billy Shantz

"Wilmer, brother of the Athletics' pitcher Bobby, appeared in 51 games for the Philadelphia team in 1954, hitting .256. He had 42 hits for 60 total bases. These included nine doubles, three triples and one homer, and he batted in 17 runs, scoring 13. With Ottawa in 1953, Billy was in 105 games, hitting .227.
Billy and Bobby look a great deal alike. He didn't have much opportunity to catch his brother in 1954 since Bobby's sore arm prevented him from working for the A's."

In 1956 he won 16 games and had 172 strikeouts at Binghamton and the following year posted the same number of victories at Denver."

SPORT MAGAZINE '60 ALL-STAR SELECTION
"Judging from Roger's early season performance, the Yankees made a great trade when they obtained Maris. He was blasting the ball at a .400 clip for the first three weeks of the 1960 campaign and combined with Bill Skowron to drive in a raft of runs.
