With Tony Kubek in the Army, Phil will be competing with Tom Tresh for regular shortstop duty with the Yankees this year. Just as capable of playing at third base or second base, he could take over at third if Clete Boyer becomes the shortstop.
Along with his defensive prowess, Phil's hitting has improved impressively during his progression through New York's farm system. He followed his .283 at Auburn in 1958 with .298 at Modesto in '59, .321 at Greensboro in '60 and .349 at Amarillo of the Texas League last year.
