Tex broke into professional baseball in 1953 with a phenomenal 16-2 record for San Jose of the California League, with a 1.51 ERA with 157 strikeouts in 155 innings. This earned him a promotion to the Red Sox in 1954. Later traded to the Washington Senators and eventually taken by the Los Angeles Angels in the expansion draft, Tex has been employed primarily as a relief pitcher in the majors. He led the American League in games pitched in 1958 after topping the circuit in double plays by a pitcher in '57.
Acquired by the Yankees from the Angels in a multi-player swap during the '61 campaign, Tex provides depth to the New York mound staff as an experienced reliever who can occasionally start.
