"Although he has never been a regular starter since coming to the Yankees, Charlie is one of the best catchers in the American League. On any other team he would be the first-string backstop.
Charlie came to New York in 1948 after leading Pacific Coast League catchers in defense two straight years. In '49 he was in 58 games and batted a solid .315, and in 20 games in '52 he hit .327."
