1962 Back-O'-The-Card: Whitey Ford

"The steady southpaw ace of the Yankees was the winningest pitcher in the major league last year. To cap a perfect season, Whitey beat the Cincinnati Reds twice in the World Series. He ran his World Series scoreless innings skein to 32, shatting an old Babe Ruth mark.
Lightning struck twice as Ford pitched two consecutive 1-hitters in September 1955."

American League All-Star Whitey Ford, Pitcher
"Although Whitey has been acknowledged as one of the best left-handed pitchers in the American League for many years, a 20-victory campaign had constantly eluded him, before last year. Last year was a banner season for the southpaw as he compiled a sensational 25-4 record. At one point during the season he reeled 14 consecutive wins, as he led the league with 283 innings pitched.
Whitey's sharp pitching doesn't stop at the end of the season. In World Series competition, he has won nine ball games and holds the record of pitching 32 consecutive scoreless innings. The fair-haired veteran also holds World Series records with 16 games started and 70 strikeouts.
Whitey is also only the fifth pitcher in baseball ever to hurl two consecutive 1-hitters."

"Edward Charles (Whitey Ford) is one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of all time. He has been the ace of the Yankee staff for ten successful years. He also has the distinction of being the only hurler in major league history to throw two 1-hit games in succession.
In the 1961 World Series, Whitey broke Babe Ruth's pitching record of twenty-nine and two-thirds consecutive scoreless innings. He is also the proud possessor of the World Series record for the most games started, with 16. He is at his best during a World Series and has posted nine victories.
Whitey leads all active major league pitchers in earned run average with 2.77. The dean of New York pitchers won 25 contests in 1961 and struck out 209 opposing batters- the latter a Yankee record for Yankee left-handers.
Whitey Ford is a man respected by every hitter in the American League."
